E.O.C Week 10: Review Exercise

You have been hired by a fashion consultant to help solve an argument between a social morality group and the Ginch Gonch marketing department. The morality group feels that Ginch Gonch should not be allowed to have a billboard of their new advertisement next to a major freeway and 100 yards from a high school. However, the marketing team at Ginch Gonch feels they are within their rights to market their products anywhere they want. Your job is to discuss the pros and cons of each side and make a decision on what should happen.

The Ginch Gonch advertisements can stir up quite a bowl of controversy. Although the Gay & Lesbian community supports this brand full on, I believe that there is a time and a place for everything. Including Ginch Gonch, for example you CAN'T put one of their explicit bill boards off the highway from any school in general. Either way its still a school an education institution where students come to learn. It is not a shopping mall therefore they don't have any right to destroy the education atmosphere of the students with their guy on guy billboards. I have nothing against the gay community, but i wouldn't even want to see a straight people half naked wearing spandex shorts near my school. It would just repulse me every day, thus distracting me from taking in knowledge.

Pros:
Pertains to the Gay Community
Decorative underwear
Controversy
Good/Bad publicity and exposure for the company

Cons:
Almost Naked stereotypical steroid models.
Too much Sexual Content.
Inappropriate.
Not suitable for children to be exposed to.
Gate way for other companies to use images like these to gain controversy.

E.O.C Week 10: Discussion Questions

What keys characteristics of Ginch Gonch’s advertising makes them unique? Why do you think consumers buy Ginch Gonch products?

Ginch Gonch key characteristics in their advertisement methods consists of
“double entendre, something that conveys two meanings, one of which is sexual and risqué.”
(Brand Story, Pg. 167) They use the "sex sells" message in their ads to stir a controversy that will make their underwear go in high demand.

Do you think it is ethical to use sex to sell products? Can you think of other retailers who do this? How does it make their products more desirable?

The sad reality of the matter is that in this world sex DOES sell.  It is also very common among high end brands to use the power of sexuality to their advantage. Dolce & Gabbana is a perfect example of a brand that uses the sex sells technique to mold their brand image.

Why do you think Jason Sutherland decided to market to the gay community? Do you think there are a lot of gay consumers? Why?

Jason Sutherland definitely thought outside the box. Catering to the gay community was a great move on his part because it expanded his customer base by a very high percentage, The gay and lesbian community crave that brand that makes their products to their needs instead of the heterosexual needs.

If you were in charge of Ginch Gonch’s next fashion assortment what would you call it? Why?

I would make an edible underwear line and call it Gin. Gin will taste just like... well just like gin, but if you want a little more flavor to your underwear's delight there is also cherry gin, watermelon gin, lemonade gin and the flavor of old plain Gin.

E.O.C Week 9: My Movie Style

Riot on Sunset Strip

My personal style preference is from the decade I should have been born in. The Revolutionary decade of the 1960's. I have always admired that decade and therefore I like to hunt for those real 1960's authentic clothes. The styles that i fantasize about include; 1960's psychedelic garage , surreal mod, native bohemian, boho british style among others. A movie that features some great 1960s clothing is the movie Riot On Sunset Strip. The actresses costumes are to die for. The textiles on the dresses and the way they are shaped highly appeals to me. Just the simplicity of the shape but the creativity behind it, is what makes me love the 1960s decade. They used over the top fabrics such as satin, fringe and lots and lots of paisley everywhere. From their dresses to their jewelry the 1960s decade was full of awesome creative clothing that stood out from the norm. They made several statements and the way the psychedelic fashion portrayed psychedelic music was genius. The Rolling Stones were covered in paisley they glamorized rock n roll with these lavishing jackets but simple trousers. In the movie Riot on Sunset Strip i am completely in love with the mini dresses and high boots. The strange and different textiles on the dresses and pretty much all of the print on 1960s clothing were unique. That's one thing about the 1960's fad they were crazy for textiles. As you can see in the images above i have also included some dresses created by Thea Porter who is one of my favorite fashion designers ever. That women is responsible for the revolutionary movement of the bohemian/ boho chic.

E.O.C Week 9: Review Questions

Ben Sander branded himself as Brini Maxwell. How would you create your own personal brand? What would your logo be? How would you design business cards? What would your theme song be? What would you sell? And who would you target audience be? Finally, where would you show your brand? On television, in a store, or on the internet? Write and design a project that reflects the ideas of developing your own personal brand. Use the previous questions as an outline

My personal brand name will be named Motor Femme. It's going to be a line that carries musical inspired clothing only! The inspiration for all of the clothing within my business is a large variety of music. My business cards will have my title Motor Femme with bloody letters on the Femme part and the Motor for Motorhead (my ultimate favorite band). The name is a combination of strong loud females with a die hard passion for loud music. The theme song for my brand will most likely be the Chocolate Watchband's song "Im not like everybody else". It's a perfect song for the isolated music lover that doesn't conform to society and always remains true to their self identity. This song is perfect for my brand. My target audience will be females from the ages of 14 to 20 something year olds. I will bring my brand exposure by exposing it in big music events, and even small local shows. I will take my brand everywhere, through the means of social media like facebook, the brands personal web site, and a brick and mortar location. I will build a strong relationship with the music community of Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Portland, Texas, etc i want to make my brand travel and get exposed to as many events as possible including the art and music community. MotorFemme will pretty much anihilate Hot Topic.
